Introduce Yourself

Okay everyone, this is where you can introduce yourselves in order to help make these blog chats more friendly and personal.

So, especially for those of you who are reading/posting participants, a brief "introduction" of yourself in the comments section below will be quite helpful. You know, the usual stuff should suffice: name (first is sufficient), where you're from, perhaps a little personal background, as well as what if anything interests you initially about this book. Feel free to get more creative though...

I am Steve. I design & develop websites, usually for small businesses or medical practices. I graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Bowling Green State University in 2005. I have a wife and dog, but you probably wouldn't expect someone like me to be as domesticated as I am. I have a great interest in the arts and culture, and as of late, biology and genetics (really.)

Money and economics, to a far lesser extent...meaning, I know how to spend money, and that's about it. I may only approach this subject from a layman's perspective, intertwined with random musings that beatniks often consider with a cup of coffee and a beat-up paperback.

Chris here. I have a BA in Social Studies Secondary Education and I'm finishing up an MA degree in Philosophy this summer. Currently, I'm living in northwest Ohio, though there's a good possibility I'll be teaching English somewhere in Asia come this fall.

I'm here to read Small is Beautiful largely because of a critical eye I've developed over the years toward our modern economic structures in general. There have been a variety of influences on me, from Chesterton and Catholic Social Teaching to Marx and Critical Theory, and a whole lot more in between (various strands of environmentalism especially come to mind).

That being said, I honestly know very little about Schumacher at this point, so I greatly look forward to exploring his writings together with everyone participating here.

Hi everybody, I'm Michelle. I graduated in December '06 with an MA in Latin American and Caribbean Studies and an MPA (Public Affairs). Between the two, I have seen a variety of economic theories, but by no means would I consider myself an expert. Schumacher is new to me as well...

I'm looking forward to learning from you all. Thanks to Chris for putting this together.

Hello all. My name is Eric. I am a Ph.D. student in Philosophy at Duquesne University while currently residing in Pittsburgh, PA. I am by no means specializing in the study of economic theories, but they are a great interest of mine, especially the writings generated from the Frankfort School in the early part of the 20th C. known as Critical Theory. I am excited to see the ways in which Schumacher can be compared and contrasted from the critical approach, as well as reading the insights of my fellow contributors. Looking forward to the dialogue!

Greetings group, I"m Ben. Spending my days as associate director of a design studio and my evenings as novice gardner. I was rewarded with a Bachelor of Science in Visual Communication Technology in 06'.

I too have little experience with different economic systems however as of recently been very interested in the transition of Americas economy from manufacturing to service. I'm also a big proponent of generating local meaning and discovering the sustainability which lies in "small is beautiful"

Many thanks to Steve for the invite.

Namaste
